Basil Benefits 


Basil is mentioned in the Quran as a gift for humankind: Also grain, with (its) leaves and stalk for fodder and sweet-smelling plant Basil was also recommended by the Prophet (S.A.W) in his hadith Whoever is offered basil let him not refuse it, as it is from heaven Basil has long been considered as an important tonic.

It is believed to have antidepressant, antiseptic, carminative and expectorant actions. Studies show that it reduces blood sugar levels and lowers blood pressure.

Fresh basil leaves reduce itching and inflammation when rubbed on insect bites, and as an infusion it boosts the immune system and has strong antioxidative effects.

The phenolic compounds of the plant especially an acid known as rosmarinic acid are assumed to be responsible for its antioxidative power this acid showed a synergistic action when combined with vitamin E (which is found mainly in vegetable oils, seeds and nuts).

Furthermore, recent studies have shown a detoxification power associated with basil leaves while basil essential oil has been found to exhibit an antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and mould.

In a hadith of the Prophet (S.A.W). he recommended basil for its sweet smell, for he said Whoever is offered basil let him not refuse it, as it is light to carry and nice to smell.

A recent study performed on humans inhaling the fragrance of the essential oil of basil found that its smell produced a favourable impression, especially when mental work was undertaken Basil is widely used in Italian dishes it is wonderful in pasta sauces and salad dressings.
Basil

Marjoram was mentioned in lbn al-Qayyim's Medicine of the Prophet, where he noted its use as an inhalation in cases of colds, phlegm and headaches. Its infusion has been used as a home remedy for colds, headaches, cough and irritability.

Recent studies proved an antioxidative and protective activity of marjoram against the DNA damage induced by oxidative stress.

Experiments have also demonstrated the strong antimicrobial power of the essential oil of the herb against numerous types of bacteria, fungi, yeast and even some viruses.

Marjoram, like oregano, is widely used in Mediterranean cooking, especially in salad dressing, sauces and marinades for meat and poultry dishes. It is a wonderful addition to pizza and roast beef.
